Short Answer: Nope. You don't have to have a house warming party.
However...
They can be fun! Also, sometimes, people bring gifts to your house that make it a home!
I get it. You have just moved in, and your friends and family have all been asking when they can come to see your home. It’s trendy to have a party, but you are exhausted. But, when do you need to have a House Warming Party? It’s your house, your time, your choice. You do not have to have a party. However, if choose to have a house warming party(HWP), it has to be when you are ready.
I have had clients have a HWP a week after they move in. Others have had theirs a month, 6 months, or even a year. It doesn’t have to be 50 guests either. Some parties are just a bbq with family, or a dinner party with close friends.
However, here are some points you need to consider:
Sending Invitations Will Motivate You
Once you have picked a date for your HWP, send out invitations (either snail mail, email, or social media). Not only will your friends and family have your new address, but this will also give you THE DATE that you have to have your home ready for people. Plus, sometimes your guests might bring a gift. It could be a gift card to home improvement stores, grocery stores, or even something that could be used as décor.
Two Birds with One Stone
Did you just move in right before a sporting event, a holiday, or a weekend with good weather? Maybe have the focus be on your home being the setting and not the feature. This will give your crew an opportunity to see your home, but focus on the big game, or holiday instead.
Before Renovations and After Renovations Party
Maybe you could have a HWP before you do renovations that is comfortable and casual. This will give your guests an opportunity to see the location, the layout, and celebrate with you becoming a homeowner. Then, when you have the time to complete the renovations, then you can invite everyone over to see the “after”.
Be Realistic
Are you wanting to have new paint, new floors, new light fixtures, and new décor? Are there particular repairs that have to get done first? Then give yourself time, and your friends and family will understand. I don’t think a home is ever truly perfect. There is always something that could be changed.
You should be proud of yourself! You have just bought a house that you are calling home. Your friends, family, and your REALTOR just want to be supportive and celebrate with you. So get ready for all the love, laughter, and lifetime of memories that will be made in your home sweet home.
