When my husband and I first talked about purchasing a home, we really thought we wanted to live in an industrial loft. We always saw them on television, and we thought that would be so cool. But then, we ended up purchasing an old Victorian style home. When my husband and I saw the Victorian home, we knew that home was "the one".
Five Reasons Why to Purchase an Older Home:
- Price. A large majority of older homes cost less price per square foot than a newer home.
- Construction. Older homes can have more solid construction than a newer home.
- Established Locations. Older homes are more times than not located in a well-established neighborhood.
- Character. Mature trees that took decades to grow, original crown molding, hardwood floors, built-ins are some great examples.
- Larger Lot Size. A good amount of older homes also have a larger lot size.
Now, I know that some of you are thinking about the following:
- What is my budget? What can I really afford?
- What about energy efficiency?
- How much work will it take to maintain an older home?
- Is an established neighborhood a non-negotiable?
- What about the downsizing trend? Tiny home trend? Less is more? Do I really even use a backyard?
These are all fabulous questions that I, a lender, contractor, and many other professionals can help you answer before you decide to purchase an older home. That is why it is so important to research and ask questions before you get involved in a real estate transaction. I have many clients who love their older homes, remodeled homes, and new construction homes. As long as the home is within your budget, meets your non-negotiables, and makes you feel at home, then that is the home for YOU!
