There are some people who still go Black Friday shopping because of the following:

  • It's a tradition for some to shop with family members
  • A reason to get out of the house, and have a break. (Chores, Family Members, Cleaning...)
  • Find deals on items they would normally purchase.

However, I have noticed, over the years, Black Friday shopping has definitely changed.

More people are shopping online. A lot of the time its because of convenience, and the items can be shipped to you faster than what the store has in inventory.

Deals that seemed to be just for “one day” are sometimes extended for more than one day; sometimes even weeks. However, some stores offer bonus gifts with the purchase of in-store items on Black Friday.

With COVID-19 (side note: I can’t wait until I don’t have to type that acronym again!!), some people still are social distancing. There are some stores that limit the number of shoppers inside the store. Also, I believe that some people are getting used to staying at home more. Because of this, I have even heard of people getting overwhelmed, or have anxiety, entering a store with crowds of people.

However, we still have life events. We have a local economy to keep alive. People still need people. Also, you have to think... if everyone is shopping online, and you need to have a purchase by a particular date.... you may not get it in time this year due to the overwhelming online shopping.

Tips on How to Prep for Black Friday Shopping for 2020

You Have to Do What is Best for You and Your Family. Period.

If that means staying in the house and social distancing, then so be it. If that means skipping Black Friday all together due to budget, then do it. If that means going outside for an hour to pick up the necessary items you need for the holidays, then go for it. You have to make the best choice for YOU! You. Do. You.

Ask loved ones who can’t get out of the house, if there is anything they need for you to pick up for them. Groceries, toiletries... If you’re out of the house, allow this to be an opportunity to help someone in need.

Truly Evaluate if You Need to Purchase Anything for Black Friday.

Are you getting your house ready to sell, and are already having difficulties de-cluttering, then why add clutter? Are you needing to add a few more items to stage your home better? Are there things you need because you have items that are: broken, not energy efficient, too big, too small, etc… then possibly replace those items.

Make a Plan on What Items You Need/Want, and Stick to The List.

Sometimes, people can get distracted with items that are attracted to buy, because of the thrill of shopping on Black Friday. Be aware of the items that lead up to the register. Sure, it’s just $1.00, $5.00, $10.00… but lots of those “little purchases” add up to unnecessary expenses.

Shop Local First

If you are going to shop on Black Friday this year, pleaseremember local businesses. The people who own these businesses are your neighbors. They go to church with you. They live here.

Think Before You Post

Avoid posting on social media the vast number of expensive items you purchased. Once it’s online, it’s online. Thieves and people who are looking for items now know where to get them.

Remember, whether shopping online or outside, this is a season to show gratitude and thankfulness. I am thankful you took the time to read this “Kelly Talk”, and I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
